220th Anniversary of James Wilson’s Death
In celebration of the 350th Anniversary of Chowan County, Historic Edenton State Historic Sites will be commemorating the death of James Wilson. Wilson was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and a signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1789, Wilson became one of the first Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Wilson’s last and final years were marked by financial failure, imprisoned and fled to North Carolina where he visited his friend James Iredell, suffered malaria and then died of a stroke at age 55. Was buried in the Johnston cemetery on Hayes Plantation near Edenton but was reinterred in 1906 at Christ Churchyard, Philadelphia.
